Overview
- The centenarian population rose by more than 2,000 from 2024 and has more than doubled since 2009, reaching 23,548 residents aged 100 or older.
- Women account for 82.6% of centenarians; among 724 people aged 105+, women make up 90.7%, and of the 19 aged 110+, only one is male.
- Longevity is concentrated in smaller regions by population size, with Molise leading at about 61 centenarians per 100,000 residents and Isernia topping provinces at 78.7 per 100,000.
- Liguria remains Italy’s most aged region by profile with 59.4 centenarians per 100,000, while Valle d’Aosta has the highest rate of residents aged 105+ and Nuoro leads provinces for 105+ concentration.
- The oldest living resident is 115, born in 1910, and Istat notes mortality risk accelerates most between ages 75 and 100 but does not increase exponentially after 105.
