Overview

  • A 3.8 meter by 8 meter BAS-01 module model went on display at Bharat Mandapam during National Space Day in New Delhi.
  • ISRO targets placing the roughly 10‑tonne BAS-01 in low Earth orbit at about 450 kilometers.
  • Design features include an indigenously developed Environmental Control and Life Support System, Bharat Docking System, Bharat Berthing Mechanism, an automated hatch, and viewports for scientific imaging.
  • Planned capabilities cover refueling of propellant and life-support fluids, protection from radiation and micro‑meteoroid debris, support for spacewalks via suits and airlocks, and plug‑and‑play integrated avionics.
  • India plans to expand BAS to five modules by 2035, positioning the platform for microgravity research, life sciences and technology demonstrations, along with potential space tourism and international collaboration.
