ISRO Evaluates Bids for Third Sriharikota Launch Pad Ahead of 2029 Deadline

ISRO is reviewing infrastructure proposals under Make-in-India guidelines to support heavier payloads with next-generation rockets

Overview

  • The Department of Space secured financial sanction in March 2025 and completed geotechnical and topographic surveys by May.
  • ISRO is evaluating bids for road construction and electrical works through tenders designed to maximize participation from Indian private firms and MSMEs.
  • The project follows a four-phase timeline with civil works due by May 2028, fluid and propellant systems by July 2028, pad facilities by September 2028 and commissioning by March 2029.
  • The new launch pad will accommodate the Next Generation Launch Vehicle and semi-cryogenic LVM3 variants to enable significantly heavier payloads.
  • India is also building a second polar-orbit spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu, to improve fuel efficiency for smaller rocket launches.
