ISRO Completes First Integrated Air-Drop Test for Gaganyaan, Validating Parachute Recovery

The successful drop validates Gaganyaan’s splashdown system ahead of a planned uncrewed G1 mission in December.

Overview

  • An IAF Chinook released a roughly 4.8–5 tonne simulated crew module from about 3–4 km altitude to test the full parachute deployment sequence to sea splashdown.
  • The sequence fired ACS mortars, deployed drogue and pilot chutes, then three main canopies that slowed the module to about 8 m/s for a safe water landing.
  • Indian Navy teams recovered the module from the Bay of Bengal using INS Anvesha and transported it to Chennai Port for post-test analysis.
  • ISRO said the IADT-01 was a joint effort with the IAF, DRDO, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, with parachute assemblies developed by DRDO.
  • ISRO reports about 7,700 of roughly 10,000 tests completed for Gaganyaan, targets the uncrewed G1 flight with Vyommitra in December 2025, and maintains a crewed goal in 2027 pending further qualification and TV-D2 results.
