ISRO Clears Three Key Gaganyaan Crew Module Tests

Validation of key safety systems for splashdown and re-entry moves the programme closer to crewed certification.

Overview

  • ISRO announced on Sunday that it completed three system-level qualification tests on the Gaganyaan crew module, reporting all tests met design requirements.
  • The Crew Module Uprighting System inflation test used stored cold gas to fill external flotation balloons and demonstrated the capsule can right itself after a sea splashdown.
  • A separation trial of the CSU-2 umbilical from a simulated crew module showed a clean disconnect and confirmed the structural stability of the crew module panel and interfaces.
  • Engineers subjected a simulated crew module to roughly 1.75 times the estimated apex-cover separation loads and observed strains and deformations that stayed within design margins.
  • The results reduce specific technical risks for astronaut recovery and re-entry but do not constitute final crew certification and further integration and qualification work remains before a crewed flight.
