Israeli Strike Kills Three Gaza Journalists as IDF Cites Drone Threat

Israel has opened an examination following competing claims over whether the men used a drone or covered an aid delivery.

Overview

  • The dead were identified as Abdul Raouf Shaath, Mohammed Salah Qashta and Anas Ghneim, with Shaath a CBS-contracted cameraman and regular AFP contributor who had recently married.
  • The strike hit their vehicle in the Al-Zahra area outside Gaza City, and video from the scene showed the car burned and smoking by the roadside.
  • The Israel Defense Forces said troops detected suspects operating a drone that posed a threat and carried out a precise strike, adding that the incident is under examination.
  • Palestinian media and the Egyptian Relief Committee said the journalists were photographing an aid distribution and that the vehicle belonged to the committee and was known to Israeli forces.
  • Reporters Without Borders says nearly 220 journalists have been killed in the conflict since October 2023, with at least 71 targeted or killed while working.
