Israeli Shin Bet Forms Specialist Unit to Track and Kill Hamas Fighters Involved in Deadly October 7 Attack
Newly formed Israeli unit, Nili, set to specifically target Hamas' special operations group, Nukhba, using field operators and intelligence personnel in response to deadly October attack that claimed 1,400 lives and involved taking over 150 hostages.
- Israel's equivalent to the FBI, Shin Bet, has formed a specialist unit named Nili. This unit will target every member of the militant group Hamas involved in the deadly attack on Southern Israel earlier this month that killed 1,400 people, many of whom were civilians. In addition to the fatalities, Hamas fighters kidnapped over 150 hostages, some of whom were Americans but have since been released.
- The Nili unit will specifically target members of a special operations unit within Hamas known as Nukhba. Israeli military officials have already claimed to have killed more than a dozen Nukhba members in a bombing campaign along the Gaza Strip. In retaliation for the October 7th attack, Israel has also cut off the Palestinian territory’s access to food, water and electricity and announced plans for a ground invasion of Gaza.
- Hamas fighters conducted the initial attack indiscriminately, killing hundreds of innocent Israelis along the country’s border with the Gaza Strip, provoking global outrage and sparking Israel's concentrated retaliation. The attack has been considered a major security failure for Shin Bet and the Israeli Defense Forces, issues the new unit aims to address.
- The Nili unit, which will operate independently from other units, will also focus on high-ranking terrorists within the Hamas hierarchy. The Israeli Defense Forces has already announced the death of several high-ranked Nukhba operatives, including the head of the terror group’s Khan Younis battalion, Billal al-Qedra, and commander Ali Qadhi.
- The formation of the Nili unit symbolizes Israel's intensified efforts to seek justice for the October 7 attack. The unit comprises both field operatives and intelligence personnel, reflecting their comprehensive strategy to eliminate all the Hamas fighters involved. Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant set the tone by stating that there are only two options for Hamas terrorists — 'Be killed or surrender unconditionally.'
