Overview

• Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian activist and English teacher who contributed to the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, was shot dead in front of a community centre in Umm al-Khair on July 28.
• Video footage shows settler Yinon Levi wielding a handgun and firing at villagers; residents and the documentary’s co-director identified him as the shooter.
• Israeli police detained Levi at the scene for questioning and later arrested him, along with four Palestinians and two foreign tourists present during the incident.
• Levi was previously sanctioned by both the United States and the European Union for violent attacks on Palestinians until President Donald Trump’s administration lifted those measures earlier this year.
• Activists and human rights groups decry chronic impunity for settlers and demand accountability in response to more than 1,000 Palestinian deaths in the West Bank since October 2023.
