Overview

• On August 6, Israeli forces opened fire on civilians queuing for humanitarian aid in Rafah, fatally wounding former national team forward Suleiman al-Obeid, 41.
• During his career al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals and earned 24 caps for Palestine, earning the nickname “Palestinian Pelé.”
• The Palestinian Football Association reports that al-Obeid’s death brings the number of sports-sector fatalities in Gaza to 662 since the October 2023 outbreak of war.
• Independent humanitarian reports estimate that over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid distribution centres since late May.
