Overview

  • At least 24 Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli troops approximately half a kilometre from a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution hub in Rafah on June 3.
  • The Israel Defense Forces says it opened fire after warning shots at individuals who deviated from designated access routes and approached its positions.
  • The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation maintains its distribution went smoothly within its secure perimeter and attributes the fatalities to movements outside its safe corridor into a closed military zone.
  • António Guterres condemned the aid-zone violence as unacceptable and called for an immediate, independent investigation into the deaths near Rafah.
  • Since October 2023, more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza conflict, and the US-backed distribution mechanism has faced UN and NGO criticism for compromising civilian safety and humanitarian principles.
