Israel Seizes New Gaza-Bound Flotilla in International Waters, Mexico Confirms Six Activists Repatriated

Israel says those detained will be deported under a lawful naval blockade, while organizers allege illegal interceptions, abuse and the confiscation of humanitarian supplies.

Overview

  • Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the intercepted vessels and passengers were taken to an Israeli port, that all aboard are in good health and that deportations will proceed quickly.
  • The Freedom Flotilla/Thousand Madleens, carrying about 140 people, was stopped 110–120 nautical miles off Gaza, and organizers say more than $110,000 in medicines and equipment were seized.
  • Spanish participants are among those detained, including lawmaker Jimena González, and separate detainee Reyes Rigo from the earlier Global Sumud flotilla remains held in Ketziot after her custody was extended.
  • Mexico’s Foreign Ministry confirmed six nationals from the earlier Global Sumud flotilla were released by Israel and arrived in Mexico City after transiting through Amman and Istanbul.
  • Waves of Freedom Suiza and returning activists report cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, and a Mexican lawyer says at least one detainee was beaten as legal complaints to international bodies are weighed.
