Israel Removes Greta Thunberg from School Curriculum Following Her Support For Gaza

Thunberg's pro-Palestinian stance ignites controversy among Israeli climate activists and prompts the education ministry to deem her unsuitable as an educational and moral role model; Thunberg later clarifies she's also against Hamas's attacks.

  • The Israeli Ministry of Education decided to remove all references to climate activist Greta Thunberg from its school curriculum after she expressed support for Gaza on X, formerly known as Twitter, by posing with a sign that read 'Stand with Gaza'.
  • Thunberg later clarified her position, stating that she is also against the violent attacks by Hamas, the Palestinian political organization that Israel and many Western countries consider a terrorist group.
  • Her stance on Gaza sparked an outcry from Israeli climate activists who thought her input was damaging their movement. More than a hundred Israeli activists published an open letter expressing their disappointment with Thunberg's 'one-sided, ill-informed, superficial' understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
  • Thunberg's post was also met with criticism from the state of Israel's official X account which mentioned that Hamas does not use sustainable materials for rockets that have killed innocent Israelis and suggested that the victims could have been Thunberg's friends.
  • Her initial post included a light blue stuffed octopus, which was viewed as an anti-Semitic symbol. Thunberg subsequently deleted this post, explaining that the toy is used by autistic people to communicate feelings and adding that she condemns anti-Semitism in all forms.
