Israel Orders UNRWA to Cease Operations in Jerusalem by January 30

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees faces expulsion following Israeli accusations of ties to Hamas and new laws restricting its activities.

Israel has demanded that the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) halt operations in Jerusalem and vacate its facilities by January 30, citing national laws passed in October 2024.
Israeli officials accuse UNRWA of being infiltrated by Hamas and claim some of its employees were involved in the October 7, 2023, attacks, allegations the agency denies but acknowledges taking internal disciplinary measures.
UNRWA provides essential services, including education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid, to nearly six million Palestinian refugees across Gaza, the West Bank, and neighboring countries.
The agency's chief, Philippe Lazzarini, warns that the restrictions could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, where many rely on UNRWA's support.
The United Nations has reiterated that Israel, as the occupying power, is obligated to ensure continuity of services if UNRWA operations are forcibly terminated.
