Israel Orders Military to Block Greta Thunberg’s Aid Ship to Gaza

Israel’s defence minister says the Madleen flotilla will be turned back despite carrying urgently needed supplies to Gaza

CATANIA, ITALY - JUNE 01: On the quay of San Giovanni Li Cuti, a group of activists attend the departure of the Madleen for Gaza with songs and Palestinian flags on June 01, 2025 in Catania, Italy. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg is among those who will attempt to sail to Gaza on a boat organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), in a bid to break Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory. Freedom Flotilla had to abort a previous journey in early May after it said its boat came under attack by drones in international waters near Malta. (Photo by Fabrizio Villa/Getty Images)

Overview

  • Defence Minister Israel Katz instructed the military to prevent the Madleen flotilla from reaching Gaza, labeling Thunberg an “antisemite” and the activists “Hamas propaganda mouthpieces.”
  • The ship departed Sicily with 12 activists and critical humanitarian cargo, including baby formula, medical supplies and water desalination kits.
  • Israel has maintained an 18-year blockade on Gaza and enforced an 11-week total aid ban before partially reopening crossings on May 19.
  • The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has spent nearly two decades challenging the siege, and its Conscience vessel was struck by drones near Maltese waters last month.
  • Humanitarian agencies warn Gaza’s civilians face acute shortages of food, medicine and shelter as the blockade intensifies.
