Israel Intercepts New Gaza-Bound Flotilla in International Waters as Mexico Repatriates Six Activists

Conflicting accounts over legality and detainee treatment sharpen the dispute around Gaza access.

Overview

  • Israeli authorities confirmed boarding nine boats about 110–120 nautical miles off Gaza, transferring vessels and passengers to an Israeli port and saying all are in good health with rapid deportations expected.
  • Flotilla organizers report roughly 140 people, including medics, journalists and elected officials, were detained and that medical supplies valued at more than $110,000 were seized during the operation.
  • Activist groups allege the interceptions were unlawful in international waters and violated International Court of Justice orders on humanitarian access, calling the detentions arbitrary.
  • A Swiss association and other participants denounced cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in custody, citing sleep deprivation, lack of water and food, inadequate medical care, prolonged shackling, and beatings.
  • Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said six nationals from the earlier Global Sumud flotilla were released, routed through Jordan and Turkey, and arrived in Mexico City on Wednesday morning under consular escort, as activists also reported drone strikes against at least one vessel in the latest interdiction.
