Overview
- On June 20, the Israeli Air Force employed the Barak air defence system to intercept an Iranian UAV that breached Israeli airspace, marking its first operational use by the air force.
- The Israeli Navy first used the Barak Magen naval variant on June 15 to shoot down eight Iranian drones from a Sa’ar6-class corvette in the Red Sea.
- Since hostilities resumed last Friday, IDF naval forces have repelled roughly 25 Iranian drones at sea using Barak Magen across multiple engagements.
- Co-developed by India’s DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries, the Barak systems use the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR radar and LRAD interceptor missiles for 360-degree defence beyond 150 kilometers.
- The IDF will continue fielding both Barak systems to safeguard offshore assets and uphold its air superiority.
