Overview
- About 30 Canadians, including six MPs from the Liberal Party and the NDP, were turned back to Jordan at the Allenby/King Hussein crossing on Dec. 16.
- Israel’s embassy said the denial was due to the trip’s sponsor, The Canadian Muslim Vote, citing funding links to Islamic Relief Canada and Islamic Relief Worldwide, which Israel designates a terror entity.
- COGAT said the group arrived without prior coordination and was denied for security reasons, while delegates said they had approvals and notified Israeli authorities in advance.
- Delegates reported that previously approved electronic travel authorizations were revoked on arrival and that they were asked to sign forms labeling them public safety threats, which they refused.
- Liberal MP Iqra Khalid said she was shoved by border officials, and Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Canada has objected to the Canadians’ treatment and is following up; no reversal has been announced.
