Israel Delivers Deadliest Post-Ceasefire Strikes on Hezbollah in Bekaa Valley

The strikes reinforce Israel’s resolve to block Hezbollah’s rearmament under ongoing US-French disarmament talks.

Weapons and other equipment, which the Israeli army says belonged to Hezbollah, are displayed for the media on Dec. 23, 2024, in a northern Israeli military base. A ceasefire had been reached a month earlier, but Israel has accused the militant group of violating its terms.

Overview

  • On July 15, Israeli Air Force jets struck Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force training camps and weapons depots in the Bekaa Valley region of eastern Lebanon.
  • Lebanese security sources say the strikes killed 12 people, including five Hezbollah fighters and seven Syrian nationals, while the Lebanese Health Ministry reported at least six injured civilians.
  • Defence Minister Israel Katz asserted that the operation sent a clear warning to Hezbollah and to the Lebanese government charged with enforcing the ceasefire.
  • The July 15 strikes mark the deadliest breach of the US-French brokered ceasefire, under which Hezbollah was to pull back north of the Litani River and Israel withdraw its troops.
  • US diplomats have proposed a four-month timeline for Hezbollah’s disarmament in exchange for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, a plan now under discussion in Beirut.
