IDF soldiers of the 7th Armored Brigade and elite Yahalom combat engineering unit demolished a 700 meter long tunnel which was about 30 meters deep.

Overview

  • The IDF and Shin Bet confirmed on May 31 that Muhammad Sinwar was killed on May 13 in a targeted airstrike on a tunnel complex beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis.
  • The operation also eliminated senior Hamas commanders Muhammad Shabana and Mahdi Quara in the same underground facility.
  • Israel says it employed precision munitions and extensive intelligence measures to mitigate civilian casualties in and around the hospital.
  • Hamas has not publicly acknowledged Sinwar’s death, leaving his role in ceasefire and hostage negotiations uncertain.
  • With Sinwar gone, command in Gaza is believed to have passed to Izz al-Din Haddad, delivering another blow to Hamas’s leadership structure.
