Israel Advances on Gaza City Outskirts as UN Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

UN agencies warn the intensified push will drive a deeper disaster for civilians facing famine.

Overview

  • Israeli forces pressed closer to central Gaza City with ground and air strikes reported in Zeitoun, Sabra, Shejaia and eastern Sheikh Radwan, where residents described homes destroyed and tent fires.
  • Gaza health authorities said at least 28 people were killed on Thursday across the enclave, most in Gaza City, with the overall wartime death toll reported at more than 63,000.
  • Israel renewed evacuation orders and says about 70,000 people have moved south, a figure Palestinian officials dispute, while UN officials reiterate there is no safe place to go.
  • The UN-backed IPC declared famine in parts of Gaza on August 22, and Gaza's Health Ministry reports hundreds of malnutrition deaths as OCHA says less than 40% of required daily food enters and only about 2% reaches warehouses.
  • Israel’s military leaders vow to intensify operations and have mobilized reservists for the Gaza City push, as prospects for a ceasefire and a deal for the roughly 48 remaining hostages remain dim.
