Islamabad to Bar Vehicles Without M-Tags Starting January 1, 2026

The measure advances Islamabad’s plan for a unified Capital Smart City built on real-time surveillance with integrated emergency services.

Overview

  • Tag readers installed at entry points and check posts will identify non-compliant vehicles, with full operations beginning on January 1.
  • Sixteen issuance centers are operating across the city, and nearly 100,000 tags have been distributed since November 14.
  • The requirement covers vehicles registered in Islamabad and other provinces, and existing motorway M-Tags will be accepted.
  • Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi inspected Safe City headquarters with Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, reviewing the digital wall and a control room’s special Chinese desk.
  • Naqvi directed an accelerated transition from Safe City to a Capital Smart City that integrates Rescue 1122, traffic management and security into a centralized system intended as a national model.
