Islamabad to Bar Vehicles Without M-Tags From January 1, 2026

The move anchors a push to fold Safe City systems into a single Capital Smart City platform.

Overview

  • Automated tag readers at major entry points will become fully operational on January 1, identifying vehicles without M-Tags for enforcement action.
  • Authorities have opened 16 issuance points and issued nearly 100,000 tags since November 14 to facilitate registration.
  • The requirement applies to all vehicles entering the capital regardless of origin, with officials warning that no exemptions will be granted after the deadline.
  • Vehicles already equipped with an existing m-tag are not required to obtain a new tag under the policy.
  • Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi inspected Safe City headquarters and directed the transition toward a unified Capital Smart City integrating traffic, security, Rescue 1122 and the Capital Development Authority, with Islamabad set as the model for national expansion.
