ISIS-Linked Extremists Kill At Least 26 in Congo Attack

Allied Democratic Forces reportedly carried out deadly attack in North Kivu province, with local authorities suggesting actual death toll may be higher.

  • Extremists with ties to the Islamic State group, known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), are responsible for the brutal attack in Oicha, North Kivu province, Congo, which resulted in at least 26 deaths.
  • Among those killed were seven members of the same family in their home, and most of the victims were shot in their homes, suggesting interactions and possible targeted attacks.
  • The actual death toll may be significantly higher than is currently reported, as confirmed by Nicolas Kikuku, a deputy governor in the region.
  • More than 120 armed groups have been fighting in eastern Congo for control over land and mineral-rich mines, resulting in a long-term conflict; the ADF has continued to expand and intensify its operations despite military interventions to stop them.
  • Since April last year, ADF attacks have claimed at least 370 civilian lives, abducted hundreds more including children, and forced the group originally from Uganda to relocate to eastern Congo.
