Ishin Backs LDP Deal, Setting Up Takaichi to Become Japan’s First Female Prime Minister

Under runoff rules, Ishin’s support is expected to secure her election even though the bloc is two seats short of a lower-house majority.

Overview

  • Ishin co-leader Hirofumi Yoshimura said the party will back Sanae Takaichi, with a signing planned Monday evening in Osaka.
  • A cooperation pact with Ishin would give the LDP-led bloc 231 lower-house seats, two shy of a majority but likely enough to win Tuesday’s prime ministerial vote.
  • Ishin lawmakers were convening and top figures Fumitake Fujita and Yoshimura planned talks with Takaichi to finalise the agreement, with Fujita citing deepening trust.
  • Tokyo stocks rallied on the prospect of the deal, with the Nikkei up more than 2% to a record in early trading.
  • The realignment follows Komeito’s exit after 26 years in coalition, and Takaichi has signalled a policy tilt toward higher spending, tax cuts, criticism of BOJ rate hikes, and pursuit of constitutional revision.
