Isaac Nader Stuns Field to Win World 1500m Gold in Tokyo

Early eliminations, a disqualification, then Kerr's injury reshaped the 1500m into a tactical final decided on the line.

Overview

  • Nader took the title in 3:34.10, edging Jake Wightman by two hundredths with Reynold Cheruiyot third in 3:34.25.
  • Positioned around fifth entering the home straight, he overhauled Wightman after a late move, with Timothy Cheruiyot and Niels Laros having driven much of the pace.
  • Defending champion Josh Kerr was visibly injured in the closing stages and finished 14th in 4:11.23.
  • The final followed upheaval in earlier rounds as Azeddine Habz and Jakob Ingebrigtsen went out in the heats and Cole Hocker was disqualified in the semifinals for elbowing a rival.
  • Nader, a 26-year-old Portuguese runner with a 3:29.37 personal best and limited prior major-championship success, celebrated with a victory lap and said he believed in himself over the last 100 meters.
