Irvine Police Foil $100,000 Handbag Heist at High-End Store With Two Arrests

A tip from building security set off a swift response by Irvine officers.

  • Officers, supported by a K-9 and a drone, searched the building, cornered the suspects upstairs and took them into custody.
  • Police identified the men as Richard Bernard Spencer, 40, of Los Angeles, and Marcellus Ronell Shelby, 30, of Hollywood.
  • The pair faces suspicion of burglary, grand theft, conspiracy, vandalism and resisting arrest, according to Irvine police.
  • About $100,000 in handbags were recovered and returned to the store, and video from surveillance and officer bodycams was posted to the department’s Instagram.
