Overview

  • Approximately 1 million taxpayers will receive up to $1,400 each, totaling $2.4 billion in payments, as part of a review of unclaimed 2021 stimulus funds.
  • The payments are being sent automatically to those who filed 2021 tax returns but left the Recovery Rebate Credit field blank or entered $0 despite being eligible.
  • Eligibility is based on income thresholds from the 2021 tax year, with the full $1,400 available to individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples earning $150,000 or less.
  • Taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2021 returns can still qualify for the credit if they file by the April 15, 2025 deadline.
  • Payments will be delivered via direct deposit or paper check, with recipients also receiving a letter from the IRS confirming their eligibility and payment details.
