Overview

  • The IRS began issuing June refunds for taxpayers who filed 2024 returns or filed extensions by April 15.
  • E-filed returns with direct deposit are typically processed within 21 days, putting most May filers’ refunds in accounts by early to mid-June.
  • Paper returns have slower turnaround because reduced staffing and budget cuts have increased manual review times.
  • As of early June, more than 140 million returns have been processed and 93.5 million refunds have been issued in 2025.
  • The average refund amount this year is $2,939.
