IRS Announces Start of 2024 Tax Season

Over 128.7 Million Individual Tax Returns Expected, with Majority of Refunds Issued in Less Than 21 Days

The IRS will begin accepting and processing 2023 tax returns on January 29, 2024.
The IRS expects to receive more than 128.7 million individual tax returns by the federal deadline of April 15, 2024.
The IRS Free File program, which offers free guided tax prep through software partners, will open on January 12, 2024.
The IRS Direct File pilot, which will allow free online filing through the agency, will roll out in phases with wide availability expected by mid-March for eligible taxpayers in participating states.
The IRS anticipates issuing more than nine out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days.
