Irixoa Councillor, 76, Dies After Asian Hornet Attack While Clearing Brush

  • Emergency responders were unable to save him, and he was buried on Thursday in the parish of San Lorenzo de Irixoa.
  • Witnesses told Televisión de Galicia that a swarm emerged from a buried nest, a type of hidden colony that makes detection harder during land maintenance.
  • The death follows a similar incident days earlier in Dozón (Pontevedra), where a 79-year-old man died after an attack in comparable circumstances.
  • According to recent Xunta figures, Galicia removed about 14,400 nests between September and January and 18,700 in all of 2024, while captured queens reached 230,000 in the first nine months versus 113,000 a year earlier.
