Irishman Killed by Maltese Police After Alleged Murder of Ex-Girlfriend

Edward William Johnston was shot during a standoff after reportedly stabbing Nicolette Ghirxi in her Birkirkara apartment.

Johnston, 50, was involved in a three-hour standoff with police in St Julian's.
He threatened hotel staff with a replica gun before the police confrontation.
Ghirxi, 48, had filed harassment reports against Johnston earlier this year.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola condemned the violence, calling for action against gender-based violence.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance.
