Irish Olympian Shane Ryan Joins Enhanced Games That Allow Banned Drugs

Ireland's sports bodies call the move contrary to clean-sport values.

Overview

  • Ryan, 31, confirmed his entry roughly a week after announcing retirement from World Aquatics competition.
  • Sport Ireland, Swim Ireland and the Olympic Federation of Ireland criticized the decision, with Swim Ireland saying he is no longer on the national team or eligible for its funding or services.
  • In June, World Aquatics said any swimmer who competes in the Enhanced Games will be barred from its competitions.
  • The inaugural event is scheduled for May 2026 in Las Vegas with $500,000 prize purses per event and $1 million bonuses for world records in the 100m sprint and 50m freestyle.
  • Organizers promote medically supervised performance enhancement, while USADA and UK Anti-Doping have condemned the project, and previous signings include Ben Proud and Fred Kerley.
