Irish Jockey Michael O’Sullivan Dies at 24 After Race Fall

The rising star succumbed to injuries sustained in a February 6 fall at Thurles Racecourse, leaving the horse racing community in mourning.

Michael O’Sullivan, a 24-year-old jockey from Ireland, passed away on February 16, 2025, after being in an induced coma for 10 days following a fall during a race at Thurles Racecourse.
O’Sullivan was riding Wee Charlie in the Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase when he fell at the final fence, along with two other jockeys, and sustained severe injuries.
Despite receiving immediate medical attention on the track and being airlifted to Cork University Hospital, O’Sullivan could not recover from his injuries.
The young jockey was celebrated for his talent, achieving 95 career wins and notable victories at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, including the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
O’Sullivan’s family has donated his organs, and tributes have poured in from across the racing world, with events canceled in his honor as a mark of respect.
