Ireland Reiterates PSNI Offer to Aid Mauritius in McAreavey Murder Probe

Dublin is turning to diplomatic channels to push for progress in the 2011 case.

Overview

  • Tánaiste Simon Harris directed officials to engage Mauritian authorities and restate the offer of PSNI technical assistance, which awaits a response.
  • Mr Harris met the McAreavey and Harte families this week, including husband John, brother Mark, sister-in-law Claire, and Barra McGrory KC SC.
  • He said he will speak with the Mauritian foreign minister in the coming weeks and will also raise the case with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
  • The proposed PSNI support has been agreed with colleagues in Northern Ireland as Ireland holds primary consular responsibility for the case.
  • Michaela McAreavey, 27, was killed in Mauritius in 2011; two men were acquitted in 2012 and there have been no convictions.
