Ireland Recalls 12,904 Passports Over Software Update Error

Replacements will be issued within ten working days following notifications to border authorities worldwide.

Overview

  • Passports issued between 23 December 2025 and 6 January 2026 were printed in a way that is not fully compliant with international standards due to a software update issue.
  • The Passport Service has emailed affected holders with instructions to return their passport book and any passport card for reissue.
  • New passports will be dispatched within a maximum of ten working days, according to the Passport Office.
  • Border agencies were alerted through ICAO and Irish Border Management to reduce the risk of disruption, though some travellers may encounter issues at eGates or control points.
  • Customers with imminent travel are advised to contact Customer Services at passportreturn@dfa.ie or +353 01 613 1780 for urgent assistance.
