Ireland Recalls 12,904 Passports Over Software Error That Omitted 'IRL'

The Passport Service will replace affected documents within ten working days to reduce travel disruption.

Overview

  • Passports issued between 23 December 2025 and 6 January 2026 were printed without the country code 'IRL', leaving them non-compliant with international standards.
  • The Department of Foreign Affairs said holders may face problems at eGates and border control, and it has apologised for the error.
  • Affected customers have been emailed and told they do not need to reapply because corrected passports will be reissued.
  • Recipients are instructed to return their passport book and any passport card to the Passport Return address at 42–47 Lower Mount Street, Dublin 2, D02 TN83.
  • Border authorities worldwide have been notified via ICAO and Irish Border Management, and those travelling imminently should contact customer services at passportreturn@dfa.ie or +353 1 613 1780.
