Ireland Logs 202 Organ Transplants in 2025, Down From 263 Last Year

Officials say the decline is not linked to the new soft opt-out law.

Overview

  • The HSE’s transplant office reported 68 deceased donors and 29 living donors enabling surgeries this year.
  • ODTI said none of the potential donors were on the opt-out register and reaffirmed that consent remains central to donation decisions.
  • Operations covered kidney, heart, lung, liver and pancreas transplants across the three national centres, with reciprocal sharing used when a match is unavailable in Ireland.
  • Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill thanked donors, families and clinical teams and encouraged people to discuss their wishes with loved ones.
  • The Irish Kidney Association warned the drop could have profound implications for patients on waiting lists, noting about 700 people are awaiting transplants, most needing kidneys.
