Overview
- The Department of Housing reported 16,614 people in emergency accommodation in September, up 261 from August and 12.5% year on year.
- There were 5,238 children and 2,443 families in emergency accommodation, with child homelessness rising faster than adults so far this year.
- Dublin remains the epicentre, accounting for 71% of homeless adults, with 11,952 people counted in the capital including 1,732 families and 3,887 children.
- Charities described the situation as shameful and pressed for an integrated plan that prioritises social and affordable housing and increased delivery to end long-term homelessness.
- The published totals exclude rough sleepers and other forms of hidden homelessness, and the Government is preparing a new housing plan expected in the coming weeks.
