Overview
- Excavations officially commenced on July 14 at the former St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home under the direction of project lead Daniel MacSweeney
- The team includes 18 archaeologists, anthropologists and forensic experts from Ireland, the United States, Spain and other countries working across more than 5,000 m²
- DNA samples from about 30 relatives have already been collected to match genetic profiles with recovered remains
- The Institutional Burials Act 2022 authorized the exhumations and the Office of Authorized Intervention in Tuam is coordinating investigative and forensic work
- The Bon Secours Sisters have pledged €2.5 million to support identification efforts and provide dignified burials for families seeking closure
