Overview

  • IOM reports 449,218 undocumented Afghans crossed into Afghanistan from Iran between June 1 and July 5, contributing to 906,326 returns so far this year.
  • Iranian authorities classify two-thirds of the estimated six million Afghans in Iran as illegal and justified the July 6 deadline by citing economic strain and security accusations.
  • UNHCR recorded a one-day high of over 43,000 crossings at Islam Qala on July 1 and has reinforced water, sanitation, vaccination, nutrition and child-protection services at border posts.
  • UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, Tajudeen Oyewale, described the influx as a humanitarian emergency, noting that 1.4 million Afghans have returned this year with 25 percent of them children.
  • Taliban authorities report being unable to absorb the sudden influx and, together with UN agencies, have called for urgent international funding to expand reception capacity.
