Iranian Journalists Released on Bail Face New Charges; Nobel Laureate's Sentence Extended

Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, who reported on Mahsa Amini's death, face charges for appearing without a hijab upon their release. Meanwhile, imprisoned Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi receives an additional 15-month sentence.

  • Iranian journalists Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, who were imprisoned for their coverage of the death of Mahsa Amini, have been temporarily released on bail. However, they face new charges for appearing without a hijab upon their release.
  • The journalists were among the first to report on Amini's death in police custody in 2022, which sparked nationwide protests against Iran's strict dress code for women.
  • In a separate case, imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to an additional 15 months in prison for allegedly spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic while in prison.
  • Mohammadi, who has campaigned for human rights in Iran for decades, has been in and out of jail for nearly 20 years due to her activism.
  • The releases and new charges come just over two months before parliamentary elections in Iran.
