Under a U.S.-brokered truce that has stalled nuclear talks, Iran’s armed displays highlight defiance toward its perceived adversaries.

Overview

  • The funeral began at 8 a.m. local time on June 28 at Enghelab Square in Tehran and proceeded 11 kilometres to Azadi Square with government offices closed for the ceremony.
  • About 60 people were honored, including armed forces chief Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, IRGC commander Gen. Hossein Salami, aerospace leader Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh and nuclear scientist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi.
  • Thousands of mourners lined the streets draped in black, chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” as flag-draped coffins passed by.
  • Senior officials at the state funeral included President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Quds Force head Esmail Qaani and adviser Ali Shamkhani.
  • The procession follows a fragile ceasefire brokered on June 24 by the United States and comes as Iran suspends cooperation with the IAEA and warns that nuclear negotiations will not resume soon.
