The Iranian body tasked with vetting legislation has approved a bill to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency despite an appeal from key ally Russia for cooperation to continue.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul labelled a vote by Iranian lawmakers to halt Tehran's cooperation with the IAEA 'a totally wrong signal'

Overview

  • The Guardian Council approved legislation requiring Iran to suspend all cooperation with the IAEA until the security of its nuclear facilities is guaranteed.
  • Lawmakers passed the bill overwhelmingly with a 221–1–1 vote in parliament, making it subject only to presidential endorsement by Masoud Pezeshkian.
  • Tehran’s move follows a 12-day conflict and subsequent US and Israeli airstrikes on Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul each publicly urged Iran to maintain its monitoring agreement with the IAEA.
  • The IAEA has stated it has not received formal notification of the suspension, leaving the status of its inspections in Iran uncertain.
