Iran Demands No-Attack Guarantee and Overhauled IAEA Inspections to Restart US Nuclear Talks

Tehran insists on preserving its right to enrich uranium under any future accord.

As per Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Tehran is ready to come back to the table, but only if the US vows that no more attacks will be carried out against the Gulf nation.

Overview

  • Iran will only resume nuclear discussions with the U.S. once it secures unequivocal promises against further military strikes on its territory.
  • A July 1 law requires all IAEA inspection requests to be approved case by case by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, replacing the Atomic Energy Organization’s role.
  • Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that Iran will not accept any deal that bars it from enriching uranium on its soil under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
  • Tehran’s Tasnim news agency denied reports from Axios and other outlets that President Putin had urged Iran to abandon enrichment in a zero-enrichment proposal.
  • Iran suspended cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog after U.S. and Israeli strikes on its Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz facilities in mid-June, prompting a complete withdrawal of inspectors.
