Overview

  • On July 25, Iranian and E3 diplomats spent four hours in Istanbul in “serious, frank and detailed” discussions over Tehran’s nuclear programme
  • The UK, France and Germany signalled they could trigger the JCPOA “snapback” mechanism if Iran fails to restore full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency
  • Iranian deputies Kazem Gharibabadi and Majid Takht-e Ravanchi insisted any deal must rebuild Iran’s trust in US intentions and rule out hidden military agendas
  • The meeting marked the first direct engagement since mid-June US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites prompted Tehran to suspend IAEA cooperation
  • Both sides agreed to continue consultations ahead of October’s expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to determine whether diplomacy can avert automatic sanctions changes
