Overview

  • The first deputy-level meeting since June brought Iran and the UK, France and Germany together in Istanbul to break the nuclear negotiating deadlock.
  • Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA after Israeli and US strikes on its nuclear sites and warned it may withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if UN sanctions return.
  • Tehran has reaffirmed its legal right to enrich uranium to 60 percent purity and insists its enrichment activities will continue despite European threats of snapback sanctions.
  • Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran will engage in further talks only if guarantees are made to rebuild trust and prevent hidden military agendas.
  • European E3 diplomats have set an end-of-August deadline to trigger the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism and are considering extending it in exchange for demonstrable progress on oversight.
