Respondents favor tougher anti-corruption enforcement, court independence, civic education and stricter rules for online falsehoods.
Overview
- Ipsos surveyed more than 9,800 voters in the U.K., France, the U.S., Spain, Italy, Sweden, Croatia, the Netherlands and Poland between September 12 and 29.
- Across the nine countries, about 45% said they are dissatisfied with how democracy works, with satisfaction below 50% in eight countries.
- Sweden stands out with 65% satisfied and Poland shows a net positive view at 40% satisfied versus 31% dissatisfied.
- Concern about the next five years is widespread, led by France at 86% and Spain at 80%, with 75% in the U.K. and Poland also worried.
- Disinformation, corruption, weak political accountability and extremism are seen as the main threats, and voters at the political extremes are most likely to say democracy is failing.
