IPID Arrests Three Over R14.9m Killarney Gem Theft

The arrests follow testimony that accused a suspended EMPD deputy chief of arranging a bogus police raid and raise fresh questions about law‑enforcement abuse.

Overview

  • Police say three suspects have now been arrested in connection with the theft of six boxes of high‑grade sugilite and manganese stones valued at about R14.9 million.
  • The stones were taken in an alleged armed raid on a Killarney apartment on February 11, 2023, and only about R40,000 worth of material has been recovered.
  • Witness K’s public testimony at the Madlanga Commission last month named suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi as an organiser, an allegation he denies.
  • The suspects face serious charges including robbery with aggravating circumstances, fraud and corruption and two accused remanded in custody will apply for bail on July 16, 2026.
  • IPID says its investigation continues, warrants remain outstanding for the other suspects and further arrests are expected as prosecutors probe alleged false police representation and actions outside EMPD’s Ekurhuleni jurisdiction.
