IPID Arrests Second Suspect Over R15m Killarney Stones Theft

Madlanga Commission testimony prompted an IPID investigation that has led to arrests, exposing gaps in recovery of the nearly R15m haul.

Overview

  • A second suspect handed himself in at Edenvale police station on 5 July 2026 and was arrested, bringing to two the warrants IPID says it has executed while a third suspect is still being pursued.
  • IPID has charged the arrested suspects with corruption for their alleged unlawful conduct during the February 2023 raid that netted nearly R15 million in precious stones.
  • Explosive testimony last month at the Madlanga Commission by a JMPD inspector known as Witness K accused suspended EMPD chief Julius Mkhwanazi of orchestrating the raid and naming several officers and a civilian as participants.
  • Only about R40,000 of the reported nearly R15 million in stones has been recovered, even though Witness K said roughly R110,000 in proceeds was later shared among those involved.
  • The IPID probe targets serving and suspended metro police members plus a businessman accused of impersonation, and the arrests could lead to further prosecutions and deeper scrutiny of metro police conduct.
