iPhone 17 Charging Jumps: 36W Peaks and 20-Minute 50% Claims Hold Up in Tests

The fastest results require an AVS-capable 40W Apple charger with a suitable USB-C cable.

Overview

  • Independent lab measurements from ChargerLAB show the iPhone 17 Pro Max reaching about 36W over USB-C when paired with multiple Apple adapters, including the new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter.
  • The roughly 36W peak marks about a 20% wired charging increase over last year’s iPhone 16 Pro Max, which topped out near 30W.
  • Apple’s claim of reaching 50% in around 20 minutes on iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max is broadly supported by Tom’s Guide’s timed tests using Apple’s 40W brick.
  • Tom’s Guide recorded model-dependent gains at 15 and 30 minutes, from 40% and 72% on iPhone 17 Pro to 35% and 64% on iPhone 17 Pro Max, reflecting differences in battery size and charge curves.
  • Achieving top speeds hinges on USB-PD 3.2 AVS support and an adequate cable, while ChargerLAB also measured about 32W via MagSafe and noted that published lab results so far focus on Apple chargers and the Pro Max.
